Their destination was Brisbane, where they would visit Explosive Protective Equipment (EPE), an Australian-owned company delivering advanced robotics and protective technologies to defence forces, police, and emergency services around the world. Their host for the day was Warwick Penrose, Owner and Chief Executive Officer of EPE and an alumnus of A Start in Life whose own remarkable journey stands as a testament to the long-term impact of early support and opportunity. ![]()
From the moment the students touched down in Brisbane, it was clear this would be no ordinary excursion. Warwick and his wife were there in person, waiting to welcome the group and personally drive them from the airport. For many students, the image of a CEO of a globally recognised company taking time out of his day to greet them warmly, without fanfare, spoke volumes. It was a gesture that immediately put everyone at ease and set a tone of genuine connection that would define the entire visit.
Students were welcomed into an environment built on innovation and purpose, and from the outset they were treated not as observers, but as participants.

On the first day, students received briefings and were given a voice in shaping their own experience, helping to plan what the next few days would look like. Whether that meant flying drones, exploring the Gold Coast, or learning about Australia's role in future space missions, the students had a hand in crafting their own adventure.
They toured state-of-the-art robotics laboratories, explored specialised protective equipment, and gained an understanding of how engineering and technology are applied in high-risk, high-stakes environments. Veterans from the field shared their stories; their experiences, their motivations, and their deep commitment to innovation in service of human safety. These were not abstract concepts lifted from a textbook. They were real stories, told by real people, working at the forefront of their field.
One of the most memorable sessions brought students face to face with robotic platforms designed to enter environments too dangerous for humans, including a sophisticated system developed by Boston Dynamics. The team demonstrated how robots can act as the first point of contact in crisis situations, keeping people out of harm's way.
Students watched as a robotic system simulated a mining rescue scenario, navigating a hazardous environment and extracting a casualty from a situation no person should have to face alone. Seeing these technologies in action made it viscerally clear: innovation saves lives.
A highlight for many students was the opportunity to fly training drones under expert guidance at EPE's testing fields. Under careful instruction and warm encouragement from EPE's technical team, students took turns at the controls, navigating the drones through the air, running mini missions, and completing flight tests. What might have seemed intimidating from the outside quickly became something exciting and achievable.
"I never thought I'd be able to do something like this," one student shared with a grin. "It was really easy, just like playing Xbox."

Growing up as a fourth-generation Mason in a small town, Warwick faced the kinds of challenges that can quietly close doors before a young person even realises they were open. From there, Warwick went on to serve in the Australian Defence Force before eventually founding and leading a globally recognised technology company.
He spoke honestly about the role those early mentors played, how they helped him understand the world, find his place in it, and believe in a future that once felt out of reach. He encouraged students to stay open to possibility, to pursue curiosity, and to resist the urge to measure their potential by where they started. His message was simple, but it landed with weight: where you begin does not limit where you can go.
