We are a dynamic, registered Australian charity that, for over 87 years, has been helping to change the future of underprivileged young Aussies, regardless of race, colour or creed. We ensure they receive the financial and emotional support needed for a well-rounded and fulfilling education.

We assist children all over Australia – in cities and the country at pre-school, primary, secondary and tertiary traineeship and apprenticeship level.

In 1922, William Thompson recognised that mums and their children who had lost their husbands and fathers in war time, needed financial help. His extraordinary vision, partnered with the generosity of Masons and the community, enabled William Thompson to build a school and establish a charity to support young Australians. They recognised that education provided the building blocks for these young people and for the future of our country. The school continued into the 1970’s but the legacy and the charity lived on.

Today - A Start in Life has grown beyond the original building blocks and continues to change the lives of thousands of young Aussies, giving them the opportunity to succeed by providing for their essential educational needs.

We help young people whose families are struggling financially and facing extreme challenges in providing for their children. We take responsibility for helping young Australians right through their pre-school, primary, secondary and tertiary schooling to ensure they are given the tools and support to achieve their life’s goals.

Our foundation, continued support and sound management means that every dollar donated goes directly to the students we help. Our operating costs are covered by the astute investment management over the last 80 years.
